English Language and Literature:
At University for Children, learning English Language and English Literature is part of social and academic capital that the child builds from early childhood to be able to function in society, communicate their ideas, develop healthy relationships, reflect and understand who they are, interpret critically what others say, what the Internet and other media tell them, so they can become critically aware, establish their own opinions, and grow their independent life and professional careers in the future. None of that is possible without a good command of the language, which creates the foundation on which all other subjects are built.
At Key Stage 1, children still learn how to speak properly, read and write gramatically, while developing the confidence to communicate on a higher reflective level. We assist them by teaching in a holistic manner which means that inputs from different subjects are combined in the acts of play, storytelling and creative activities. Children do not feel they are 'at school', as learning is focused on them and the activation of mind, body, emotions and individual abilities. They encouraged to enjoy words, discover their own voice and develop a genuine passion for reading and writing.
As children progress through Key Stage 2 and towards GCSE and A-level exams, learning becomes increasingly structured and academically challenging while remaining student-centred, interdisciplinary and creative. There is time and space for assessment and exam practice, but predominantly students learn how language and literature connect to, and underpin their own world and wider society.
At Key stage 2 and 3, we read and analyse poetry, novels, newspaper articles, film scripts, and many more sources. We watch and discuss films and news in which students are interested. We explore formal and informal communication, encounter different styles, voices and genres, we visit theatres and museums, discuss relevant plays, and connect historical and contemporary events with literature student study under their school curriculum. These connections help students understand not only what a text means, but why it was written, whose voice it represents and how language shapes the way they see themselves in the world.
The purpose is to help children understand that English Language and Literature are not just ambiguous subjects that simply need to be “passed”. They are tools of communication for life, enabling self-development, social relationships, personal reflection, academic achievements, and successful careers in the future.
A strong command of language gives a young person greater power to express ideas, articulate ambitions, develop talents and pursue life goals. That is why it is worth investing in these abilities early - before a child absorbs the idea that poetry is “weird”, reading is a chore, or English is useful only for passing an examination.

Booking & Cancellation Policy
Classes are booked and paid monthly in advance, covering 4 weekly classes per month, except where the teaching calendar is affected by holidays.
Free Trial
Before deciding, families are invited to book a free 30-minute online trial meeting for parent and child. The trial can also take place in person on request. This is an opportunity to meet the tutor, discuss your child's learning needs and experience our approach.
Individual Classes
If you choose individual tuition, you can proceed directly to booking and paying for your first 4 classes.
Group Classes
If you choose group tuition, your child will be matched with the most suitable small group of up to 5 children, online or in person. If a suitable group is not currently available, we will let you know within three weeks.
Cancellations
A class may be cancelled up to 4 days before the scheduled class. The fee for that class can either be refunded in full or carried forward to the following month.
For cancellations made less than 4 days before the class, the full class fee remains payable and cannot be refunded or carried forward.
